JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) __ Statewide athletic organizations with public school members would have to report the effects of concussions on high school students, under legislation supported by several Missouri House members.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Todd Cookson, of Ripley County. Cookson told a House education panel Thursday that data on head injuries would help schools find ways to better protect students.

Groups such as the Missouri State High School Athletic Association would have to submit a report to a House committee by the end of January 2012.

Several committee members voiced support for the bill, saying the report should show how often such injuries occur. They say it should also be expanded to include neck and spine injuries.
