St. Louis Zoo Elephant, Donna, Has Tuberculosis
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Louis Zoo officials have announced that one of their elephants is sick.
Donna, a 40-year-old Asian elephant, has tested positive for tuberculosis.
The zoo routinely tests all its elephants for TB as part of its comprehensive health monitoring program.
Donna was diagnosed through a blood test and “trunk culture”.
“Our established protocols have allowed us to detect this early and take steps to get Donna on the road to a full recovery without complications,” said Dr. Randy Junge, the zoo’s Director of Animal Health.
Donna came to the St. Louis Zoo shortly after her birth in the wild in 1971.
