Kinloch Mayor Fights Embezzlement Charges

Kevin Killeen

ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–The Mayor of Kinloch wore a grey suit and pleaded not guilty,  during a brief appearance in federal court to answer charges he stole city money to pay for pleasure trips.

Mayor Keith Conway was arrested earlier this week, after a federal grand jury indicted him on one felony count of wire fraud and another felony count of federal program theft.

The 47-year old Conway appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Ann Medler, who reminded him to abide by all the terms of his $25,000 release bond.   He had earlier been ordered to surrender his passport and stay in the St. Louis area.

The indictment alleges Conway travelled to the Bahamas, Las Vegas and Ft. Lauderdale, using city funds to pay the way.    He is also accused of using taxpayer money to pay for his credit card bills,  electric bill and his federal income taxes.

After pleading not guilty Wednesday morning, Conway walked away from the court house at a brisk clip,  answering no questions from reporters.
