There was a lot of secrecy surrounding the film “Super 8” when it was in production. The cast & crew were obligated by Paramount to reveal nothing about the movie or its story, so pre-release marketing and publicity were very slight and potential audience awareness build up was minimal. So, scoring a healthy $37 million in a crowded summer movie market for the top spot in its first week of domestic release is considered quite a victory for “Super 8.”
In second spot this weekend is “X-Men: First Class” at $25 million, down 55% from its opening weekend totals. “The Hangover Part II” was in 3rd spot with $18.5 million. “Hangover” has taken in a total of $216.6 million in 3 weeks of domestic release. In 4th spot this weekend was “Kung Fu Panda 2” with $16.6 million and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” was 5th with $10.8 million.
