SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Citing a St. Louis judge’s ruling, the Springfield City Council decided to indefinitely stall plans to reinstate the city’s red-light camera system.

The council voted Monday night to postpone restarting use of the cameras until a lawsuit filed by several ticketed drivers is settled.

The May 20 preliminary ruling found that St. Louis did not have the authority to use red-light cameras without specific permission from the state Legislature. The Springfield News-Leader reports that the St. Louis case is likely to be appealed.

City Manager Greg Burris said Springfield has planned to use the same vendor and an ordinance similar to one used by St. Louis. Springfield had shut down its red-light cameras after a court declared its method of enforcing the tickets conflicted with state law.
