Curious Snake Caused Big Electrical Outage

WEST COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) — Almost all the power is back on now in West County, with only a few outages still scattered in Ballwin, Manchester, Ellisville and Chesterfield..

Nearly 24,000 homes lost electricity Thursday morning, leaving Ameren Missouri customers wondering what was going on as they looked at the clear, blue sky overhead.

It turns out that the culprit wasn’t bad weather, but a snake that ventured into the Marshall substation and zapped a high-voltage line.

Ameren officials say it’s a year-round problem, but especially during warm weather when snakes and other “critters” are more active.

The snake did not survive its encounter with the high voltage line.
