ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – A week after crews closed down the Jamieson Bridge over Interstate 44 for resurfacing, there’s still confusion and frustration.
“We don’t need big trucks going down a street that two cars hardly fit on,” says Alderman Joe Vaccaro. Vaccaro’s talking about Ivanhoe — a street people in the local neighborhood want left open but that other drivers are using to bypass more congested alternates.
“We’ve had multiple cars, up to five cars, that have been sideswiped. People are very concerned about the speed of the traffic. Since we took the parking off one side during peak times it’s made traffic speed up a little bit.”
Vaccaro says MoDot and the city have been making changes on a daily basis — but if Ivanhoe continues to be an unsafe route, the street may have to be closed to thru traffic.
Hampton at 44 is the recommended alternative for the Jamieson closure. Watson and Arsenal are other detour routes.
Alderman Vaccaro will meet with local residents tonight (Tuesday) at 5:30 at Southwest Baptist Church on Watson to get more input on the Jamieson Bridge closure.
