ST. LOUIS (KMOX)– A little over a year from now, some popular medicines could cost a whole lot less. That’s because generic versions of the drugs will be allowed to hit the market.

The popular cholesterol fighting drug Lipitor is one of the drugs that will go generic, and cost considerably less, but Barnes Jewish cardiologist Dr. Andy Cates says we need to be careful when substituting

“With statins there will be several statins now that are on the market that are generic. Each one of those has potentially different side effects in different patients. Some of the drugs interact with medications and other statins within that same family of drugs may not interact with other drugs so there needs to be good communication between physician, patient, and pharmacist.”

Other drugs going generic include the blood thinner Plavix and allergy fighting Singulair.
