ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) -  Wedneday morning’s death of a 63-year-old Alton man has now been confirmed as the St. Louis area’s 17th heat related fatality of the summer.

63-year-old Jerry Besterfeldt was found by his girlfriend when she awoke around 7:30 am Wednesday.

Madison County coroner Steve Nonn reports that Besterfeldt’s core body temperature was 104 degrees Fahrenheit, while the room temperature remained just under 94 degrees despite having cooled off all night.

Police say Jerry Besterfeldt had slept in the bedroom while his girlfriend stayed in the living room in front of a fan.

A window-mounted air conditioner was in the bedroom but was not turned on in order to keep electricity costs down.
