More Criticism Aimed at Mid America Airport

BELLEVILLE, IL.  (KMOX) – There’s strong criticism toward the St. Clair County Board from one of it’s own members for the continued financial support of Mid America Airport.

Ed Cockrell says he’s supported the airport for almost 19 years and its joint use with Scott Air force base and agrees its had an economic impact on the St. Louis region, but now says there should no longer be a blank check for the airport.

“We’re grasping at straws here.  We want something to happen so badly we’re desperate, and I get advised at a county board meeting:  ‘here, vote on it, don’t ask any questions, just vote,”  Cockrell told KMOX’s Mark Reardon.

He says the cost to taxpayers is nearly 1-million dollars a year in operating costs and a four to five million for payment on the debt.

County Board Chair Mark Kern appeared earlier on the Charlie Brennan show defending the airport.
