Family Remembers Boy Killed Outside Zoo

Megan Lynch

ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOX) – This year would have been an important milestone for a boy killed ten years ago outside the St. Louis Zoo.

“Yah this year’s been a tough year,” says Angie Maue.  “This year we would be — we should be — celebrating his 18th birthday.”

Her son Luke was killed in May 2001 by a drunk driver.

“The biggest thing is living longer now without him than we had with him, and as time goes on and we add those years it just becomes more and more of a reality.  It’s hard to bear sometimes.”

Instead of sending her oldest off to college, Maue will honor Luke’s memory by sponsoring a run to benefit the Gateway Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.  Several years ago family and friends formed a team called Runners 4 Luke to help other charities.  “This year we decided to do our own race and honor and help a cause that was so near and dear to us and helped us through a very rough time,” explains Angie.

The Runners 4 Luke Hope 4 Tomorrow walk-run is September 18th, just a few days before Luke’s birthday.  To ensure you’ll get a t-shirt, register by August 31st.
