EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOX) – One pedestrian is dead and a second critically-injured after being struck on the Poplar Street Bridge, early Sunday morning.

Illinois State Police report prior to the incident on the Poplar Street Bridge,  a car struck a St. Louis Police Department squad car, at which time the officer tried to stop the vehicle. However, the driver of the Mustang took off eastbound on the Poplar Street Bridge. While on the bridge, the driver struck the two pedestrians.

The male victim was knocked off the bridge deck and pronounced dead.  He is identified as 26 year old Daunte D. Simmons of St. Louis.  The female was transported to an area hospital.

The driver of the Mustang was then stopped on Route 3 in East St. Louis. Police say the driver and his passenger appeared to be intoxicated. Neither person could speak English, so an interpreter was called in.

Police say Garcia had a 0.16 blood alcohol level. He is being held in the St. Clair County Jail.
