BELLEVILLE, Il. (KMOX) - The driver of a car that struck two people on the Poplar Street Bridge early Sunday, killing one, has been charged in St. Clair County, IL.
26-year-old Brandon Garcia is jailed on four counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was driving east on the PSB when he struck two people trying to cross the bridge on foot.
27-year-old Duante Simmons was knocked over the railing by the impact and fell to his death.
The woman walking with him, 27-year-old Elvira Secic, suffered “great bodily harm and permanent disfigurement” according to the charges filed by St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly.
Bond for Garcia was set at $250,000.
Garcia had reportedly been trying to flee across the bridge into Illinois after striking a St. Louis police car at Market and Memorial moments before the fatal crash.
