Student Aid Scheme In S.C. Involves Webster Univ.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A Florence, South Carolina woman is headed to federal prison on student aid fraud and mail fraud charges involving St. Louis-based Webster University.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Michelle Owens used the identities of 23 inmates at the Leath South Carolina prison to obtain financial aid for the inmates to attend Webster’s distance learning program, without lenders or the school initially knowing about the scheme.

They say Owens was confined at the prison from 2007 through 2008 and had access to inmate records during that time.

A judge sentenced her to 51 months behind bars, and she must repay the $128,000 she pocketed.
