ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson has approved plans to merge three suburban St. Louis Catholic schools.

The new Catholic school system will be named Holy Cross Academy. The academy comes from the merger of Annunciation School in Webster Groves, St. Michael’s School in Shrewsbury and Our Lady of Providence School in Crestwood.

The diocese says the new school is expected to open for the 2012-13 academic year.

After the merger, kindergartners through fifth-graders will attend Our Lady of Providence and St. Michael’s, and students in grades six to eight will attend Annunciation.

Catholic school enrollment in the diocese’s 11 counties declined by 14,000 in the last 10 years, to about 34,000 students.
