Former SIUE Rapper Trial Set to Begin

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) More than four years after he was charged, an aspiring rapper is set to go on trial in southwestern Illinois on charges that accuse him of threatening a Virginia Tech-like attack.

Olutosin Oduwole  is charged in Madison County with a felony count of attempting to make a terrorist threat.

Prosecutors say Oduwole wrote a note threatening a “murderous rampage” in July 2007 while he attended Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. The note referred to a gunman’s deadly rampage at Virginia Tech just months earlier. It was found in his car on campus.

Oduwole’s attorneys contend the note was harmless and was merely music lyrics.

Police say the note didn’t make any direct reference to targeting SIU’s campus.

Oduwole has pleaded not guilty and is free on bond.
