ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals have made changes to their coaching staff after hiring manager Mike Matheny. Dave McKay and Joe Pettini are no longer coaches while Chris Maloney and Mike Aldrete are being promoted.
The new Cardinals manager said this in a statement released by the Cardinals, “Just like our players, the Cardinals organization places a high-level of expectation on its coaches. I have great admiration for the work these men have done throughout their careers and we will continue to invest in the preparation, coaching and leadership necessary to build upon that success.”
Working on a lot of areas for the World Series Champions, GM John Mozeliak commented on the coaching staff decisions, “Once we identified Mike (Matheny) as our new manager, he quickly went to work in assembling a coaching staff that offers a wealth of experience and leadership, but he also looked at areas where we could provide growth opportunities for key members from within the organization,” said Cardinals Senior Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. “We are extremely excited about our staff for next season.”
Dave McKay, the first base coach for 16 seasons, along with Joe Pettini, the bench coach for the last 10 seasons, are being reassigned within the organization. The nature of their new assignments is not yet known.
Chris Maloney, now the former Memphis Redbirds manager, is joining the Cardinals after 5 season as the manager of the Triple-A affiliate. Maloney, who also was a candidate to replace Tony La Russa, will replace Dave McKay as the first base coach.
Mike Aldrete gets a full-time position being promoted from assistant batting instructor to bench coach. Like Mike Matheny, Aldrete has been a coach with the organization since 2008. He replaces Joe Pettini, who was the interim manager at one point this season when Tony La Russa was recovering from shingles.
Returning to the staff are pitching Dave Duncan, third base coach Jose Qquendo, bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist, and hitting coach Mark McGwire.
