CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) – Shelby Dasher, the 20-year-old south St. Louis County woman accused of killing her young son, made a brief appearance in a Clayton courtroom Thursday.
Wearing a tan prison-issued jumpsuit and shackles, showing little emotion, Dasher appeared before circuit judge Lawrence Permuter just before 9 am.
Barely speaking, Shelby Dasher nodded when asked if she understood the charge against her and whether she was pleading “not guilty”.
She’s accused of beating her 13-month-old son Tyler to death overnight Monday in a fit of rage because the boy wouldn’t go to sleep.
Investigators say she then wrapped the tiny body in a blanket and dumped him near a cemetery along the River Des Peres about a mile from her home on Clevedon.
She initially told police that she awoke around 11 am Tuesday to find that Tyler was missing, after she had put him to bed approximately 10:30 the previous night.
Shelby Dasher was appointed a public defender after telling the court that she couldn’t afford an attorney.
Her next court appearance was set for Jan. 5, 2012.
