CHESTERFIELD (KMOX) – “Resident outrage” at Saturday’s Monarch Fire Board meeting.
“Who on earth do you think you represent? Either you have forgotten or do not care who pays the bills. Both of you, Ms. Evans and Mr. Swyers, are batting for the wrong team,” declared Jane Durrell.
She said it wasn’t necessary for the board to terminate four command staff firefighters — one of which, battalion chief Fred Goodson, recently passed away.
Larry Hoffman of Chesterfield specifically went after board member Steven Swyers, saying he “is a union puppet.”
“I don’t even know what that means, quite candidly,” Swyers responded. “I’m my own man. I make my own decisions, based on what I believe to be the right answer.”
Some members of the audience and board member Robin Harris asked Swyers and board president Kim Evans to resign over the personnel moves. Both declined.
“That’s certainly not going to happen,” Evans said. “We’re doing the right thing for the people. We’re making the best decisions possible.”
More than thirty people crammed into the Monarch board room Saturday, with eight addressing the board and expressing displeasure with the firings.
In other business, the Monarch board voted 2-to-1 to hire Tom Vineyard, of the Mid-County fire district, as fire chief.
