St. Louis Looks to Cut Firefighter Pension Benefits

Greg Branson

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is looking to cut pension benefits for city firefighters.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports the mayor is looking to replace the current benefit package because of rising costs, and the failure to reach a new agreement with the union.

The city’s contribution to the retirement fund has increased from $7.2 million in 2007 to $24.3 million this year.

The city projects the cost will go to $32.9 million by 2014.

The mayor’s plan would let firefighters keep benefits they already have earned.
