ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) – The one cent rise for the occasional birthday card or letter probably won’t break the bank for anyone, but for those who send a lot of letters, it adds up. At the St. Louis post office downtown, one woman says it’s not just postage that’s draining her wallet, it’s everything else too.
Stamps will cost 45 cents for a standard letter starting on Sunday, postcard stamps will raise in price too. But there’s always the Forever stamp, a stamp that no matter when it’s bought will always be enough postage to send a birthday card.
One man we talked to at the post office says he doesn’t mind paying the extra cent; he says it’s a good investment in the post office, an entity that needs as much help as it can get right now. The post office is cutting back its delivery speed, and is considering closing branches to cut back on costs. A rise in mobile and Internet communication has dealt a blow to postal revenues.
