Mid-Missouri Teen Charged In Grandmother’s Death

HOLTS SUMMIT, Mo. (AP) — A mid-Missouri teenager has been charged with killing his grandmother and shooting at law enforcement officers.

Seventeen-year-old Ryan Wayne Koebel faces multiple counts, including first-degree murder and first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. The Callaway County prosecuting attorney filed the charges Saturday morning.

Koebel is accused of fatally stabbing and shooting his 60-year-old grandmother, Karen Cates, on Friday morning in their Holts Summit home. Authorities allege he used a .38 caliber handgun to shoot at Missouri State Highway Patrol and Holts Summit Police Department officers as he walked along U.S. 54.

The patrol says a trooper hit the teen with his vehicle. The teen was treated at hospitals in Columbia and Jefferson City before being taken to the Callaway County Jail.

It isn’t known whether Koebel has an attorney.
