ST. LOUIS (KMOX)-There’s word that the new Mississippi River Bridge construction project is not only running on time, but is also under budget.
MoDOT Project Director Greg Horn tells KMOX that with 26 of the 35 projects awarded, the bridge is 11%, or $55 million under budget, “One of the things is, the construction industry is very tough nowadays and there’s not a lot of work out there so the contractors are very competitive. That has a lot to do with it.”
Horn says that while costs are levelling off, he hopes the remaining nine contracts, which will all be awarded by I-DOT, will also come in below estimates.
He says if the entire $735 million project is completed under budget, the states will be able to use the leftover money for other projects.
The bridge is on schedule to open in early 2014.
