JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) – A state lawmaker from St. Louis county is aiming to stop the epidemic of scrap metal thefts across Missouri.
Right now a patchwork of municipalities have passed scrap metal laws, but Representative Don Gosen of St. Louis County says there’s no let up in the theft of copper pipes from homes, and air conditioners from school roofs.
“We’ve also had a church in the St. Louis area that’s had their copper gutters stolen several times,” said Gosen. “They had to have parishioners camp out in the church at night waiting to hear the noise.”
Under Gosen’s bill, scrap sellers would be forced to take a check, no more cash deals for sales over $50. Grosen also wants the check mailed to an address on their driver’s licence to give prosecutors a paper trial.
Scrap Metal bill is : HB1530
