Baby Boomers Encouraged To Get Tested For Hepatitis C

Fred Bodimer

ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- A local liver disease specialist applauds the Centers For Disease Control recommendation that all baby boomers should get a blood test to see if they have Hepatitis C.

The CDC reports about 4 million Americans have Hepatitis C, but 75 percent of them do not know it.

According to Dr. Mauricio Lisker-Melman, director of the liver diseases program at Washington University School of Medicine, people can get the disease from abusing drugs, blood transfusions, tattoos, or piercings.

“There are several ways you can acquire the disease,” Dr. Lisker says, “Many people don’t know they have the infection because they don’t have  many symptoms or no symptoms at all.”

Dr. Lisker says a simple blood test given in the doctor’s office or at a clinic could lead to identifying many baby boomers who were unaware they even had the disease, and hopefully, catching it in time before it becomes more serious, and maybe even curing it.
