ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced Wednesday afternoon that they have placed infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list due to a right oblique strain, suffered in Tuesday night’s game.

The club has purchased the contract of catcher Steven Hill from Memphis. Hill will be in uniform in the series finale against the San Diego Padres wearing uniform #60.

Hill, 27, has made starts at catcher, first base, left field and right field for the Triple-A Redbirds, batting .257 (18-for-70) with four home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games. Hill has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games at Memphis and he homered in back-to-back games this past Sunday and Monday (May 20-21).

The 5-11, 200-pound Hill debuted with the Cardinals in 2010 and smacked a home run in his second career Major League at-bat on August 15, 2010 vs. the Cubs. The Houston, Texas native was the Cardinals 13th round selection (412th player overall) in the 2007 amateur draft out of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The Cardinals have disabled five players in the past week, including Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Kyle McClellan, Lance Berkman and Matt Carpenter and they currently have seven players on the disabled list.

Hill becomes the 31st player to appear on the Cardinals roster this season.
