WELLSTON, Mo (KMOX)- One young man is in a hospital after being shot by a Wellston Police officer Thursday afternoon.

St. Louis County Officer Rick Eckhard says it happened at R. M. Moore and Page, when the officer pulled over a vehicle carrying three young men,  for a traffic violation, “The passenger jumped out of the car and the driver jumped out of the car. The driver actually had a handgun in his hand. It was in defense that the Wellston officer shot the driver.”

Eckhard says another officer chased down the passenger who tried to run. A third suspect stayed in the car.  A weapon was recovered from the vehicle.

The wounded suspect is in surgery.  No officers were hurt. There’s no word yet on why the car was being stopped.
