ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — It appears scrap metal thefts have branched out from gutters and air-conditioner units, to your car.
Nationwide, police have reported an increase in oddball car part thefts, like the car’s catalytic converter and airbags. Thieves reportedly want the precious metals contained in those parts. Then they hawk them on the black market.
Jim Camoriano with Missouri based State Farm Insurance says other coveted car parts are tires, rims, and GPS navigation systems.
Some scrap thieves can take what they need from your car while its parked in your driveway, but less daring criminal might just steal the whole thing.
Last year around 1,600 cars were reported stolen in Missouri, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The most popular stolen models are mid 90’s Ford Taurus, Pontiac Grand Prix, and the Honda Accord.
