ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–A Caseyville police officer was hospitalized in stable condition after he crashed his car into a railroad bridge pier while chasing a theft suspect in north St. Louis.

Police say it started in Fairview Heights, Illinois, where two suspects stole “more than a thousand dollars in merchandise.” The chase was on, across the Mississippi River, then racing along the east outer road of Interstate 70, where a railroad bridge crosses above the street.

“The vehicle that he was following drove past the civilian (vehicle) at a high rate of speed, causing them to swerve into the officer, and the officer trying not to strike them, struck the bridge,” said Lt. Donnell Moore.

Moore says the injured officer was conscious when he was pulled from the car.
