ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- In an effort to beat the heat, police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department in St. Louis will help deliver fans to area senior citizens during the 9th Annual Summer Cool Down.
The event, which also includes a luncheon and a meal-delivery service to seniors who are unable to attend, takes place Wednesday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at the Five Star Senior Center located at 2832 Arsenal.
More than 150 seniors citizens are expected to attend the luncheon which will include games and other activities. In addition to the seniors who attend, police officers will deliver 350 meals to homebound seniors. To assist those who do not have air-conditioning or who are choosing not to use air-conditioning due to financial constraints, box fans will be given to senior citizens in need at the luncheon and during the meal delivery service.
The Five Star Senior Center provides Meals on Wheels service to 350 individuals on a daily basis. As a result of budget restraints, they have been forced to reduce their service by one meal per month.
Organizers of the Summer Cool Down offered to extend their luncheon to these individuals and fill the gap for July.
The event is sponsored by Aramark Uniform Service and Walgreens.
