Belleville Man Charged with Hate Crime

BELLEVILLE, IL. (KMOX) – A Belleville man is charged with a hate crime and doing damage to a church.  Police allege 18 year old Codie Engelke entered the New Freedom Church at 2301 West Main Street and wrote a racial slur on a chalk board.

He is also charged with burglary and doing damage at the church. The hate crime charge is a class-4 felony and is punishable with up to three years in prison.

The burglary charge could get him another fifteen years if convicted and for criminal damage to property, another possible five years.

Engelke is being held in the St. Clair County Jail on $150,000 bond.
