SIU-Carbondale’s Enrollment Continues to Fall

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Administrators say fall enrollment at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is down for the eighth year in row.

WSIU Radio reports that 18,847 students are now enrolled at the school. That’s down 970 from a year ago.

Administrators attribute the decline to smaller junior and senior classes, along with cuts to financial aid and a smaller pool of potential students.

But Chancellor Rita Cheng says bright spots include the fact that there are more international and first-time students on campus.

Cheng says that despite the downward slide, she believes the university’s enrollment issues may be turning around because the decrease is less dramatic than a few years ago.
