ST. JACOB, IL (KMOX) - A village in Madison County, Illinois has shut down today because its board of trustees couldn’t approve a budget.
St. Jacob mayor Ray Muñiz says the part-time police force, 2 clerks and four public works employees won’t be on the job today because he’s lost his ability to pay them.
“We do have police protection in St. Jacob, so we are secure as far as police protection,” Muñiz said.
He says the village doesn’t have a full-time police force, so right now it’s getting help from Madison County.
The soonest everyone could come back to work is after an emergency board meeting on Monday night.
Until then, he says most residents won’t notice a big change in daily life.
