FLORISSANT, MO (KMOX) – A Florissant police officer will be awarded the Purple Heart tonight after being shot three times by a suspect in May.

Officer Michael Vernon was shot by a burglary suspect on May 28. He will be awarded the medal at the Florissant City Council meeting tonight.

“Officer Vernon has been a tremendous inspiration to the Florissant Police community,” Chief William Karabas said in a press release.

Ten other Florissant police officers will be awarded Chief’s Letters of Commendations “for their actions following Officer Vernon’s shooting,” according to Chief Karabas.

The Florissant Police Welfare Association is selling tickets to a Cardinals game on September 19 against the Astros. Proceeds from sales of the left field loge tickets will benefit Vernon and his recovery efforts.
