Cameras Coming To More Illinois Courtrooms
SPRINGFIELD, IL. (IRN) – The Illinois Supreme Court today will approve ten new counties for a “cameras and microphones in the courtroom” pilot program.
Chief Justice Tom Kilbride says the first (Alexander, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Williamson) and 18th (DuPage) Circuits have asked to be included in the program.
“Things are going well,” Kilbride said, “and this is a project that is going to sell itself in a cooperative kind of fashion between the news media and the judges who are working on it. I think the more judges see how this evolves and develops in the circuits around the state, it’s going to take off exponentially.”
Kilbride, accepting the Illinoisan of the Year award Sunday from the Illinois News Broadcasters Association, finds himself getting as much publicity as the lawyers and defendants; his mother told him the paper in his hometown of Kankakee has his picture on the front – and pictures of a local murder trial on the back.
