FLORISSANT, MO (KMOX)-It’s being vilified in a viral video entitled “We Are Hungry” and complained about in many homes around the country, but the new healthy school lunch program promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama, has a backer in at least one local school superintendent.

Ferguson-Florissant superintendent Art McCoy says the program is teaching students the importance of eating healthy.

McCoy tells KMOX that french fries have been replaced by salad and fruit bars and even all the chips in the vending machines are baked.

So we asked him: are students actually eating from the salad bars? “To be honest, they’re required to choose one or two items from the salad bar and they are eating it.”

But are they liking it? “They of course which they had potato chips back because potato chips are in most cases fried. We’ve even done away with fried potato chips, we’re doing baked as needed, so that’s been one of the concerns.”

But McCoy says the students are getting the message about eating healthy, “When they see their options and see what’s not available as options any more, they know we’re serious.”
