Illinois Lt. Gov. Pushes For Price Tags On College Degrees

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KMOX) – The Lieutenant Governor of Illinois says soda cans and candy bars come with calorie labels, so maybe colleges should have labels telling you how much you’re about to spend on a degree.

“We’re working on getting information to students as they’re thinking about where to apply to college, about what that ultimate price tag is,” Sheila Simon said.

Simon is talking about College Choice Reports, a bill currently being debated in Congress that would require schools to report average net costs and debts for students, in an easy-to-read label online.

“I really think it’s just being a more informed consumer and making sure that when you make the choice about where to go to school, you know what those total bills are going to be in the end,” Simon said.

She says too many students don’t know how much debt they’re taking on when they enroll.
