Wireless Company Donates Phones, Cash To Fight Domestic Violence

SPRINGFIELD, IL (IRN) – Some domestic violence victims in Illinois will soon have an important tool in their hands: the ability to call for help. D

People trying to stop domestic violence in Illinois have accepted two donations: 1,000 used cell phones and a check for $10,000.

Vickie Smith, executive director of the Illinois Coalition against Domestic Violence, says the money, donated by Verizon Wireless, will be used to help her agency’s Virtual Legal Clinics, which are also supported by Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon.

The donated phones, which Simon characterized as “turning everyone’s junk drawer into good news,” will be erased and refurbished.

Some will be recycled, others given to domestic violence victims.
