Woman’s Body Found In Burning Alton Home

Update: Police now say that the death of a 43-year-old woman in this morning’s fire was an instance of suicide.

No one else was in the home at the time. The woman had two children who were staying with an ex-husband at the time.

ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) –  Investigators say there’s reason to suspect foul play after a woman’s body was found in a burning home early Wednesday morning.

The victim’s a 43-year-old mother of two whose name has not yet been released.

Her body was found in the basement of the home in the 1900 block of Orchard after neighbors noticed flames shooting out of the carport around 2 am.

KMOX’s Brian Kelly at the scene reports that the fire did minimal damage to the house itself and appeared not to spread to the basement where the body was found.

Investigators tell him there were signs of “obvious trauma” that were not fire-related.

The victim’s two sons were staying with their father and he’s not believed to be a suspect in the case.

KMOX News and www.kmox.com will have much more on this deadly fire as details become available.
