St. Mary’s Opens Renovated Emergency Room

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Mary’s Health Center in Richmond Heights has officially opened its newly renovated emergency room.

St. Mary’s president Kate Becker says this redesigned emergency room has been expanded to include a much bigger waiting area.

“Part of it is because our emergency room volume has been increasing about fifteen percent a year, year after year, for the last several years so we’re seeing a lot more patients through the emergency room, we’ll see about fifty-thousand patients through the emergency room this year,” Becker said.

“And with that volume we didn’t have enough space and it wasn’t adequately laid out to accommodate the families who were waiting for all those visitors coming through or the paramedics and EMTs who were bringing in patients through our ambulance entrance.”

The big increase, she said, is partly due to a tough economy which Becker says leaves many people waiting to the last minute before seeking medical care, either because they don’t have insurance or now have higher deductibles.
