Some notes from the St. Louis Rams Wednesday practice before taking on the San Francisco 49ers Sunday on the west coast:
-WR Danny Amendola was a limited participant at practice this Wednesday, bettering his chances for playing Sunday.
Amendola hasn’t played since fracturing his clavicle on Oct. 4 against Arizona. He was a surprise participant in practice when the Rams traveled to London to take on the New England Patriots two weeks ago, but he didn’t dress for the actual game.
With the bye week under his belt, Amendola is a good bet to be active this weekend. Also back on the practice field on a limited basis was LT Rodger Saffold, who hasn’t played since week two against the Washington Redskins. QB Sam Bradford said getting those two starters back this week provides a boost to the offense.
“It could give us a huge lift,” Bradford said. “Obviously, those two guys are big parts of this offense. We’ve definitely missed them being out. It’s been great to have them out at practice the past couple days. They’ve looked good. I think they’re excited to be back. Bring some energy to our huddle. It’d be really nice to get those guys back on the game field on Sunday.”
-Also practicing Wednesday was C Scott Wells. Wells left the season opener against the Detroit Lions with a fractured foot and was placed on injured reserve with a designation for return. Wells returning to practice this week gives him three weeks to practice before he counts against the active roster.
-With one player close to coming off the IR, the Rams put another on Wednesday. S Matt Daniels, who has struggled to stay health in his rookie season, went on injured reserve Wednesday with an ACL injury suffered against the Patriots. With the bye week, the Rams didn’t need to make a move until today.
CB Quinton Pointer was promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad to take Daniels’ spot. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said Pointer will assume many of the special teams duties Daniels had.
“’QP’ knows what we’re doing,” Fisher said. “He’s a fine special teams player and he fits in well. He’ll step in and he can fit in and take over for everything that Matt (Daniels) was doing for us.”
-To take Pointer’s place on the practice squad, the Rams signed WR Saalim Hakim. Hakim is the younger brother of former Rams WR Az Hakim. Like his older brother, Fisher said Hakim’s speed is his best asset.
“Cortland said, ‘Where’d you get that guy? He ran by me three times,’” Fisher said. “Yes, so he can really run.”
