SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Three members of a Springfield family are facing federal charges alleging they distributed $6.7 million worth of illegal synthetic drugs commonly known as K2.

Acting U.S. Attorney David M. Ketchmark says the indictment unsealed Friday marks the first federal prosecution in Missouri’s Western District of someone accused of selling synthetic drugs.

A federal grand jury in Springfield returned a sealed indictment Tuesday against 26-year-old Brandon Franklin, his 54-year-old father, Douglas Franklin, and his 24-year-old sister Caitlyn Franklin. The indictment was unsealed after the three were arrested.

The Franklins are accused of distributing K2 through their Springfield business, ThirdEye, since October 2009. K2 is the common name of synthetic marijuana sold as incense.

A spokesman for Ketchmark said Friday afternoon none of the three had obtained an attorney.
