BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A Metro-East jury has deadlocked on whether a man who raped, murdered and mutilated a woman nearly 50 years ago remains so dangerous he should be committed.

Roger Burns kidnapped the woman from a Belleville coin laundry and killed her in 1965. Four months later he kidnapped another woman, though she escaped.

Burns, now 70 years old, pleaded guilty, served his sentence and was paroled in 2008.

But his parole agent filed a complaint about disturbing behavior. And it was left up to a St. Clair County jury to determine whether Burns should be declared a sexually violent person, deemed too dangerous to return to society.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/XbXmaN ) reports 10 jurors found he was dangerous; two disagreed. No date has been set for a retrial.
