AFFTON, MO. (KMOX) - A newspaper article in New York has gun enthusiasts reeling across the country. The Journal News of White Plains, New York published the names and addresses of all handgun permit owners in Rockland and Westchester counties.
“I’m extremely disappointed that it came out. It’s a privacy issue and it’s also a security issue for the individual and for society as a whole,” said Al Rothweiler, owner of Mid America Arms in Affton.
There’s also been a lot of discussion about possibly banning high-capacity magazines but Rothweiler says such a ban would be insignificant because it takes a shooter only seconds to reload a magazine.
“We are being demonized for the unlawful, criminal in society that happens to choose the firearm as their weapon, and we are under siege” said Rothweiler.
CynDee Royle, the editor and vice president of The Journal News, was not surprised by the strong reactions their story has elicited.
“We knew publication of the database would be controversial,” she told the LA Times, “but we felt sharing as much information as we could about gun ownership in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings.”
