EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) – East St. Louis public school administrators are scrambling to find busing for students who lost transportation after an audit found they weren’t entitled to it.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Illinois law gives bus transportation only to certain students. That includes those who live more than a mile and a half from school or who have to negotiate dangerous highways or railroad tracks to get to school.

But an audit found that East St. Louis’ school district may have been providing busing to students who shouldn’t have been getting it. The financially strapped district is under state control.

It’s not immediately clear how many students were affected.

That service was cut Monday, angering parents who broadly said the district never notified them about the service being halted.
