Habitat For Humanity Denied Permit In Des Peres
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Habitat for Humanity St. Louis wants to open a second “ReStore” but not everyone is in support. Habitat’s current ReStore is on Forest Park in the Central West End.
The ReStore is Habitat’s retail operation which takes donations of new and gently used building materials and then sells them to the public with the proceeds benefitting the mission of Habitat, Humanity St. Louis CEO Kimberly McKinney explains.
McKinney says they found a space behind the Sam’s Club in Des Peres for their second location and requested an occupancy permit but were denied. Current zoning laws don’t allow the sale of used or previously owned clothing, household or consumer goods.
But McKinney says the Habitat ReStore does not carry used clothing or household goods, only building materials. And she points out the previous owner was a granite and marble retailer and the planned use of the space by Habitat wouldn’t be much different.
Habitat for Humanity St. Louis will go before the Des Peres Board of Adjustment tonight to request a variance. A super majority vote is needed for passage.
