HIGHLAND, Ill. (KMOX) - A Metro-East home invasion suspect is in critical condition, after being shot by one of his female victims.

Highland Police Chief Terry Bell tells KMOX that when one of two sisters stepped outside her apartment in the 3600 block of Eagle Way to have a cigarette at 3:30 Sunday morning, a 33-year-old Troy, Ill. man forced his way inside the residence.

Chief Bell says the man then assaulted the women and demanded they give him money, “After repeated pleas from the sisters to get out and stop the assault, one of the sisters pulled a revolver from a living room drawer and shot the assailant multiple times.”

The women —ages 47 and 55 — were treated for minor injuries.

Bell says it appears to be a random crime of opportunity.
