Expressway Named After Cong. Jerry Costello?

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) – There’s a push to name a new Interstate 70 expressway in the Metro-East after recently-retired Congressman Jerry Costello of Belleville.

Illinois State Representative Dan Beiser of Alton says his fellow Democrat spent 20 years in Washington advocating for the St. Louis metro area, “He treated everyone like he should, which is just like himself. He felt like he was no better or no worse than anybody. He was truly the people’s representative.”

Beiser’s bill passed the Illinois House and is headed to the senate.

The Costello Expressway would span between Interstate 64 and the new Mississippi River Bridge.

KMOX’s online petition drive to name the bridge after Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial now has more than 4700 signatures. To view the petition, click here.

As for the bridge, no word recently from the Illinois legislature on a naming preference. Missouri lawmakers are considering a bill to call it the Stan Musial Memorial Bridge.

U.S. Senators from both Missouri and Illinois have all expressed support for the Musial idea.
