Thousand of Dollars for St. Louis Artists Up For Grabs

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — Area artists can soon apply for the two things they need most — money and time.

The application process begins next month for nearly $75-thousand in grants awarded by the Regional Art Commission. The Artists Support Grants could be used for a new camera or a trip to New York.

In addition Arts Commission Executive Director Jill McGuire announced Monday that the commission will award ten $20-thousand dollar fellowships to local artists. The term artist doesn’t mean just painters, McGuire said architects, graphic designers or anyone in new media is welcomed to apply. The application process begins this June with the fellowships being awarded in mid-September.

McGuire said the idea for the art grants came as a result from the largest ever survey of area artists and their lives.

“We realized, we didn’t know as much as we thought about the individual artist environment and what they did,” said McGuire.

McGuire said the commission’s long term plan is to help St. Louisians understand what a remarkable cultural environment their city has to offer, which she says is “one of the best in the country.”
