Inmate Hangs Himself in Madison County Jail

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) — Correctional workers found a 55-year-old inmate for Maryville, Illinois hanging in his jail cell Thursday morning from his underwear.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office says the inmate, whose name will not be released at this time, had been held in the Madison County Jail since August 24, 2011. He faced charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated unlawful restraint, solicitation to commit home invasion, solicitation to commit aggravated kidnapping, solicitation to commit residential burglary, and unlawful possession of contraband in jail.

The solicitation charges and contraband charges were filed against the inmate yesterday after an investigation by Sheriff’s Office detectives revealed that he was planning to hurt the female victim on the previously filed charges of sexual assault.

The Sheriff’s Office says once the inmate was found hanging in his cell emergency workers tried to revive him, but failed.
